In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, Christian influencers hold significant sway over their followers, shaping narratives, and influencing viewpoints.
However, a recent trend has emerged where some influencers seem to prioritize "calling out" church leaders over Biblical sermons and prayer.
This shift raises the vital question: Are these influencers defending the faith or feeding into a culture of gossip and drama within the church?
The Prophet Nathan vs. the Modern Influencer

In 2 Samuel 12, we are reminded of the prophet Nathan, who courageously confronted King David about his sins with Bathsheba and Uriah.
Nathan's approach was one of love, wisdom, and a genuine desire for restoration.
His relationship with David allowed for a deeper impact, as the king was more likely to heed advice from someone he knew and trusted.
Contrast this with the current scenario where numerous influencers, often strangers to the leaders they criticize, take to social media to air grievances publicly.
While accountability is crucial, the manner in which it is delivered can either build up or tear down the body of Christ.
The Balance Between Accountability and Grace
As members of the Christian community, our responsibility extends beyond mere criticism.
We are called to love one another and to bear each other's burdens (John 13:34; Galatians 6:1-2).
Defending the faith involves not only calling out wrongdoing but also extending grace, forgiveness, and support to those who have fallen.
While discussing issues within the church is important, it should be done with the goal of restoration and not sensationalism.
Certain Christian influencers can be likened to the religious equivalent of the Wendy Williams show.
Sharing church drama without the intent to bring about positive change can contribute to a culture of gossip and division, ultimately weakening the church's witness in the world.
Finding a Path Forward

In navigating the complex terrain of social media influence, we must remember the power of our words (James 3:1-11).
Before publicly critiquing church leaders, let us first lift them up in prayer.
Let us seek to establish relationships built on trust and respect, mirroring the example set by Nathan and David.
Defending the faith goes beyond pointing out flaws; it involves embodying the love and compassion of Christ in all interactions.
By prioritizing prayer, accountability, and grace, we can foster a culture of unity and understanding within the body of believers.
Social Media Self Reflection
Let us examine our motives and methods.
Are we truly defending the faith, or are we inadvertently perpetuating a cycle of gossip and division?
May we strive to emulate the wisdom and discernment of the prophet Nathan, approaching challenging situations with humility, love, and a genuine desire for restoration.
Remember, our words have the power to build up or tear down (Proverbs 18:21).
Let us choose wisely.
May the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with you.
