In today's society, the topic of cannabis (marijuana) has shifted from one of taboo to one of increasing acceptance.

Even more concerning is the amount of Christians I encounter who are completely okay with the use of cannabis.

With various forms of consumption available and some states legalizing its use, the question arises: Should Christians use cannabis?

Topics we will address in this article:

  1. The Biblical Perspective

  2. The Medical Perspective

  3. The Moral Perspective (Is it a Sin?)

  4. The Wisest Perspective

The Biblical Perspective

When it comes to cannabis, the Bible itself does not explicitly mention it. However, Scripture emphasizes the importance of self-control and being led by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, regardless of whether lack of self-control is related to cannabis, cigarettes, alcohol, pornography, sugary drinks, or pastries and cookies, we should let the Holy Spirit guide us instead of our impulses.

Ephesians 5:18 urges believers to be filled with the Spirit, not succumbing to harmful addictions or substances that impede His control of our lives.

Our bodies are recognized as temples of the Holy Spirit, and ingesting anything harmful goes against this sanctity (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Furthermore, the Bible calls for believers to be of sober mind and remain vigilant against the attacks of the devil (1 Peter 5:8).

The long-term mind altering state caused by cannabis contradicts the clarity and alertness advocated by Scripture.

The Medical Perspective

From a practical medical perspective, research indicates that cannabis is not only an addictive gateway drug to more potent substances but is also associated with mental health disorders.

“Of all the people I’ve diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, I can’t think of a single one who wasn’t also positive for cannabis.” New York City psychiatrist Dr. Ryan Sultan

Without a doubt, someone will ask, "What about using cannabis for medical reasons?"

There are numerous medications prescribed for emergency medical purposes, all of which come with negative side effects.

It is important for individuals to be truthful: Are they using cannabis for a legitimate medical emergency that justifies the risk of psychotic side effects, or is the motivation behind using cannabis to seek solace, escape, or cope with underlying issues?

If the latter is the case, then our prayer is that the root issue will be addressed, eliminating the necessity for harmful substance reliance.

The Moral Perspective (Is it a Sin?)

While I am not dogmatic in my viewpoint, I strongly believe that cannabis use is not supported in Scripture and can be a root of sin.

There are various sins involved in the use of cannabis, including a lack of self-discipline, not being guided by the Holy Spirit, turning to an addictive substance for assistance in times of need, and causing harm to our bodies (which are considered as God's temple).

This all leads to grieving the Holy Spirit, which we are also warned not to do (Ephesian 4:30).

The Wisest Perspective

There are choices, wise choices, and the wisest choice.

Is using a drug linked to psychotic disorder the wisest choice?

Christians who are considering using cannabis or already using it should reflect on whether it is in accordance with the values outlined in Scripture.

At Wired For Christ, we hold the belief that it is not.

For those looking to stop using cannabis, it is recommended to find assistance and encouragement from spiritually mature Christian community members.

Also, participate in a weekly Bible Study that teaches the complete counsel of God's word, rather than focusing only on the "God loves you and understands" message.

Conclusion

It is important that we help carry each other's burdens, as we are all striving to lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us.

Remember, as followers of Jesus, our actions should always reflect the virtues and teachings of our faith.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16

May the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with you.
